8 Habits of Success

Building wealth takes years of smart decisions, both professionally and financially. But according to according to one man who interviewed hundreds of self-made millionaires, getting rich also means keeping certain lifestyle habits.

Everything that you are today, and everything that you will ever accomplish, is determined by the quality of the habits that you form.

By creating good habits and adopting a positive behavior, you too can become successful and live a prosperous life.

Go To Bed Early:

If you want to watch one more episode on Netflix think again.  Getting the proper amount of sleep is critical to not only your mental health and creativity but to weight control. When your biorhythms are off it wreaks havoc on your entire system. Getting the proper sleep your body needs sets you up for success in everything else you want to achieve. So rest up, you have much to accomplish tomorrow!

Read about your industry and beyond.

“I spend an hour, usually after dinner, reading about my industry, related industries, current events, and pop culture. I start with daily curation emails like Jason Hirschhorn’s REDEF series and then branch out. I bookmark and tag (first with Delicious, now with Evernote) posts that I like and might refer to later. When possible, I share these posts, along with a brief summary of my rationale for sharing, with my team or friends. If nothing else, this process helps me remember the salient parts of the post and gives me time to explore how they fit into my larger view of things. This is my version of something Alvin Toffler wrote about that likened our worldview to a filing cabinet in our brains; whenever new information gets presented to us, we catalog and file it and then it goes on to inform our worldview in some small way. There’s tremendous power and opportunity in understanding how seemingly unrelated trends and events will go on to affect the work you’re doing.”

Work out for a strong body, which holds up a strong mind.

“Successful entrepreneurship requires more than just mental fitness, it requires physical fitness as well. I have a daily workout regime that started in 2013 and has grown and evolved in step with our business. It started with CrossFit (high-intensity interval type training) and has expanded from there. Clearing your mind and challenging yourself physically with a tough workout every day prepares you for the daily challenges of business. A strong body holds up a strong mind.”

Be purpose oriented

A purpose gives direction to a man’s life. Without it, you end up living by somebody else’s standards, or just follow the crowd and never live up to your full potential.

But, hey! You’re an individual.

What’s more, you have powers within you waiting to be unlocked. Any vision you create in your mind’s eye today can be the life you live. To get there, though, you should have a clearly defined purpose — one that you follow day after day.

If you haven’t done this yet, now is the time. In fact, you’ll need to be purpose-oriented in order to be able to develop all the other habits of successful people.

Describe your life purpose, include details about every aspect of your life. Be sure you want these things and aren’t just doing what others expect you to do.


 Understand the power of no.

I’ve heard the expression ‘Say yes and figure it out later,’ but personally, I believe in setting expectations right from the start. If I know I can’t do something or if I know I’ll need additional resources, I convey that immediately. It may not be the answer my prospect is looking for, however, I have found that when I do this, I earn much more respect for being honest and caring about our relationship vs. solely focusing on my bottom line. The same thing goes for when I’m in a negotiation process. No matter what business you are in, your goal, of course, is to make money. However, when I look at each of my opportunities, I ask myself one very important question. ‘Does this have the possibility of generating enough financial gain based on the time commitments it will require?’ If I say yes to everything, I risk spending all of my time on projects that will not allow my company to grow. If the answer is no, I am not afraid to push back with my reasoning.  I keep calm and professional of course, but everyone deserves to have their voice and concerns heard no matter what side of the fence you are on. Sometimes it’s hard for business owners to be honest with themselves about this, but you must value your time. Not every opportunity will work, and that’s OK. There is always the next one.”

 Take risks

All high-achievers learned how to take risks, accept uncertainty, embrace change, go out of their comfort zones, and do something (even when the situation looked hopeless).

Often, you might hear from others that your goals are impossible. Remember though, you are your best motivator and shouldn’t let others interfere with your vision. Impossible is just a limitation you set for yourself— you can easily remove it and be unstoppable.

 Let go of the past.

Last but not least, if you want to do what successful people do, you need a clear mind.

A clear mind will help you make good decisions, focus on work, build discipline, not get overwhelmed or distracted, and keep your purpose and vision in mind. To make that happen, you need to leave the past and anything connected to it behind.

Why?

It’s harmful to your mindset and behavior in the present. You can’t build the habits of successful people if you’re constantly comparing your current life to your past, or reminding yourself of painful situations from back when you were less confident and less responsible.

By looking in the past, you’re basically reliving it all over again, and taking a step back in your personal development.

Once you let go, you make room for so much more. You can finally change your habits more easily and let positive transformation into your life. You can breathe freely, enjoy life, take action to reach your goals, and form a better mindset.

Self-Discipline

Your ability to discipline yourself, to master yourself, to control yourself, is the most important single quality that you can develop as a person.  The habit of self-discipline goes hand in hand with success in every area of life.

Every one of these habits, being goal oriented, results driven, action orientated, people orientated, health conscious, honest and self-disciplined can be developed.  You are where you are and what you are today because of your habits.  Your habits have been developing, mostly accidentally, from the time you were an infant.

Today you can take complete control over the shaping of your character and personality, and everything that happens to you in the future, by making the decision, right now, to find the definition of the habits that will lead you to great success.

And when you develop the same good habits possessed by other successful people, you will enjoy having success in common.
